The Utilities Maintenance Specialist 3 (Trainee) is skilled technical work involving specialized testing, maintenance, and repair of utilities systems equipment, lines, or devices. Employees in this class perform routine and preventive maintenance on a variety of utilities systems and devices. Duties may include supervising skilled and semi-skilled employees, and work is performed in accordance with established procedures, but requires initiative and independent judgment.
This is an excellent opportunity to bring utility maintenance experience into a mid-level career ladder role and train for a Utilities Maintenance Specialist 3 (UMS3) level. Once training is successfully completed, individuals will become UMS3 employees and receive an increase in pay. Also, there are future opportunities to advance to a UMS4 level, supervisor or manager roles.
Position Specific Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and 3 years of skilled utilities field experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Additional Requirements
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Distribution System Operator Class 3 License.
- Possession and maintenance of a Temporary Traffic Control Certification within 9 months of employment.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Candidate may be required to perform manual labor for extended periods occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
Highly Desirable
- Ability to operate medium to large excavating equipment.
- Working knowledge of GIS mapping system for water, sewer and reclaim infrastructure.
Illustrative Tasks
- Lead person of a small to medium-sized construction crew installing, maintaining and repairing of water, sewer, and reclaimed apparatuses.
- Performs and directs visual inspection of sewer lines.
- Installs clean-outs, backflow devices.
- Performs related work as assigned or required.
